The Local Craic is published by Tyche Digital Media Limited, a company registered in Ireland, company number 741635. In this notice, “we”, “us” and “our” mean Tyche Digital Media Limited.
We are responsible for deciding how personal information is used to run The Local Craic website at www.localcraic.ie and its newsletters, including What’s the Craic, Bray? This makes us the data controller for that processing.
Contact us about your information or this notice at [email protected].
Correspondence address: Glencap Commons North, Kilmacanogue, Co Wicklow, A98AY91, Ireland.
When you subscribe. Our current signup form asks for your email address. We also keep information about your signup, such as when and how you joined, your subscription status and the consent you gave. You do not have to subscribe to browse the publicly available parts of our website. We need an email address to send you the newsletter.
When you visit or interact with an email. Our publishing platform, Beehiiv, processes technical information to operate the service and provide analytics. Depending on the feature, your choices and your email/browser settings, this can include your IP address, approximate location, device and browser information, pages visited, referral source, delivery information, and email opens or link clicks. These records can be associated with your subscriber profile; they are not necessarily anonymous just because we look at overall totals.
Our website also uses Google Analytics and the Meta Pixel, subject to the consent choices explained below. These tools can receive website addresses, browser/device information, cookie or similar identifiers, and information about actions such as visiting a page or completing a signup. We do not deliberately include newsletter email addresses or other directly identifying form fields in Google Analytics events or page addresses.
When you contact or contribute to us. We receive what you choose to send, such as an email, a story tip, a correction, a photograph or a response to a poll. This may include your name and other details you volunteer. Please do not send unnecessary sensitive information or someone else’s private details.
Facebook and Instagram signups. We plan to offer newsletter signup through Meta lead ads. If you choose to subscribe through one of those forms, Meta will pass us the information you submit for that purpose. We intend to request your email address only, alongside the signup and consent records needed to manage your subscription. The form must identify The Local Craic, link to this notice and make clear that you are signing up for our newsletter. Meta also handles information under its own Privacy Policy.
Sending the newsletter. We use your email address and subscription records to send the newsletter you requested, including any clearly labelled sponsorships or affiliate content within it. Our legal basis is your consent. You can withdraw it at any time using the unsubscribe link in an email or by contacting us. We will not treat newsletter signup as consent to unrelated marketing from another business.
Running and protecting the service. We use necessary account, delivery and technical information to manage subscriptions, prevent abuse, investigate delivery problems and keep the website and newsletter working. Our legal basis is our legitimate interest in operating a secure, reliable publication, where that use is necessary and does not override your rights. Consent is still required for technologies or activities where the law requires it.
Understanding what is useful. We use readership and website statistics to understand which content readers find helpful and improve the publication. Non-essential cookies and tracking technologies require consent where applicable. Agreeing to receive the newsletter is not, by itself, agreement to every form of tracking. Where analysis does not require consent, we rely on our legitimate interest in improving the publication, subject to your rights and reasonable expectations.
Measuring and improving our advertising. With the required consent, we use the Meta Pixel to understand whether our Facebook or Instagram advertising leads to website visits and signups. Where enabled and covered by your consent, Pixel data can also support advertising audiences and more relevant advertising. This is different from newsletter signup and is not authorised simply because you subscribe.
Answering messages and handling submissions. We use correspondence to respond, check facts, consider submissions and deal with corrections. Our legal basis is our legitimate interest in communicating with readers and producing accurate local information. We seek permission where needed before publishing identifiable contributions or using material for a different purpose. Editorial reporting can raise separate legal considerations, which we assess for the particular material.
Meeting legal responsibilities. We may keep or disclose information to meet a legal obligation. Where appropriate, we may also retain necessary records to establish, exercise or defend a legal claim, relying on our legitimate interest in doing so.
The website uses technologies needed to operate features such as secure access and subscription management. Beehiiv also provides website and email measurement features.
Google Analytics. We use Google Analytics to understand how visitors find and use the website, including the pages viewed and actions taken. It uses identifiers and technical information to produce reports. Our legal basis for the non-essential Analytics tracking is consent. See how Google uses information from partner sites and Google’s Privacy Policy.
Meta Pixel. With your consent, the Pixel sends website-event and technical information to Meta. Meta can match information with Facebook or Instagram accounts and use it for measurement, advertising and other purposes explained in its notice. This information is not necessarily anonymous. See Meta’s Privacy Policy.
Non-essential Google Analytics and Meta Pixel tracking must not run until you have given the relevant consent. You can refuse non-essential tracking without subscribing or browsing being conditional on accepting it, and later withdraw consent through the website’s cookie controls. The actual cookie providers, purposes and lifetimes must be made available with those choices. You can also manage cookies in your browser, although blocking essential ones may affect some features.
Email measurement is separate from website cookies. A website cookie choice does not necessarily change the tracking in an email already delivered. You can block remote images in your email app to limit some open tracking, but this does not prevent every form of measurement, including tracked links. Contact us if you have questions or wish to object to processing based on legitimate interests. You can always unsubscribe from the newsletter.
You can also use Google’s Analytics opt-out browser add-on and Meta’s account advertising preferences where available. These are additional choices, not a replacement for the website’s consent controls. We will review this notice and the required consent arrangements before adding further tracking tools or materially different uses.
Beehiiv. We use Beehiiv to host the website, manage subscriptions, deliver emails and provide publication features and reporting. It generally handles our subscriber information on our behalf under its Data Protection Addendum. Beehiiv also describes certain processing for its own purposes, including security and fraud prevention, in its Privacy Policy.
Some optional Beehiiv advertising or data-enrichment services involve a different use of information and separate responsibilities. Before using those features, we will assess the processing, explain any additional uses and put the necessary choices and legal safeguards in place. This notice does not give blanket permission for new profiling or advertising uses.
Google. Google receives information through Google Analytics to provide the service. Its handling depends on the service terms, account settings and your choices. We do not treat agreeing to website analytics as blanket consent to Google advertising features or uploading our subscriber list.
Meta. Meta Platforms Ireland Limited receives website-event information through the Pixel. For the collection and transmission of event information used for the joint purposes described in Meta’s Business Tools Terms, we and Meta act as joint controllers. Meta’s subsequent processing falls under its own responsibilities. Our Controller Addendum with Meta allocates responsibilities: we provide the relevant information and obtain required consent, and Meta handles applicable rights requests concerning data it stores after collection and transmission. You can contact either of us about the joint processing; we will cooperate and route requests as necessary. Meta’s policy explains its purposes, legal bases, contact details and rights mechanisms.
Other service providers and advisers. Providers needed to operate our email correspondence and business may handle relevant information on our behalf. Professional advisers or public authorities may receive information where necessary for legal advice, compliance or a lawful request. Access must be limited to what is needed for the purpose. We will identify any additional material providers and uses when those services are introduced.
Sponsors and advertisers. We do not sell or rent our subscriber list or hand identifiable subscriber details to local sponsors or advertisers for their own marketing. We may provide overall campaign results that do not identify individual readers. This does not mean no information reaches advertising platforms: Meta receives Pixel information as explained above. Clicking an advertiser’s or affiliate link also takes you to another service, which may collect information under its own notice; that is different from us handing over our mailing list.
Your contributions. If we agree to publish a contribution, the agreed content and credit can be seen by newsletter recipients and website visitors. Please discuss any request for anonymity or confidentiality with us before sending sensitive material.
Beehiiv is a US company and uses service providers in the United States and other countries. Using it can involve transferring information outside the European Economic Area. Not all countries have the same data protection rules as Ireland.
Beehiiv’s Data Protection Addendum includes the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses where required for transfers. These are contractual safeguards designed to protect personal information. Its current subprocessor list gives more information about its providers and their locations.
Google and Meta also operate internationally, and their services can involve processing outside the EEA, including in the United States. Their applicable service terms and privacy notices explain their transfer safeguards, including Standard Contractual Clauses where applicable. Contact us if you would like information about the safeguards relevant to our processing or a copy of the applicable safeguards, subject to necessary redactions. We will assess the transfer arrangements for any additional provider before using it for your information.
We keep information for the purpose for which it is needed, not indefinitely simply because storage is available. Our retention approach is:
Active subscriptions: we keep your email address and necessary subscription information while you remain subscribed. We review whether the information we retain is still needed at least annually.
After you unsubscribe: newsletter sending stops. We remove unnecessary subscriber-profile information within 90 days, except records we need for the limited purposes below or a specific legal reason.
Consent records: we retain a limited record of when, how and on what terms you subscribed, and any withdrawal, for up to three years after unsubscribe or the last relevant consent event, whichever is later. This is to demonstrate the basis on which we contacted you and resolve related complaints. A documented legal obligation or actual dispute may require relevant records to be held longer.
Opt-out records: we retain the minimum information needed to respect your choice not to receive the newsletter while there is a realistic risk of re-adding you. We review this need annually. An opt-out record is not used to send marketing.
Routine correspondence and unpublished submissions: we normally delete these within 12 months after the matter is closed, unless a continuing editorial, permissions, complaint or legal need justifies retaining particular information longer.
Published contributions and permissions: published material can remain in our archive. We retain necessary permission and attribution records while the material is published and for the period needed to deal with related claims. Contact us about any concern; we will assess requests under the applicable law.
For Google Analytics, our policy is to retain user-level and event-level data covered by its retention controls for 14 months, with the user-retention reset on new activity switched off. Standard aggregated reports are not subject to that same setting. Meta’s Business Tools Terms state that Meta may retain event data for up to two years; advertising audiences can remain until deleted through the account tools. We review the need for audiences and delete those no longer needed. Cookie lifetimes are separate from these data-retention periods and must be shown in the website’s cookie information.
Unsubscribing is not the same as deleting every record. You can separately ask us to erase information. We will explain any information we still need to retain and why.
Depending on the circumstances, you can ask us to access, correct or erase your information; restrict its use; or provide information you have given us in a portable format. You can object to processing based on legitimate interests. You have the right to object to use of your personal information for direct marketing.
Where we rely on consent, you can withdraw it at any time. Withdrawal does not make earlier lawful processing unlawful.
Email [email protected] to exercise your rights. We may need proportionate information to confirm we are dealing with the right person. We respond without undue delay and within one month. Where the complexity or number of requests makes a lawful extension necessary, we may take up to two further months; we will explain this within the first month. Rights can be subject to legal conditions and exceptions.
You can also complain to Ireland’s Data Protection Commission or another competent supervisory authority. You do not have to contact us first, although we would welcome the chance to help.
Our newsletter subscription service is intended for people aged 18 or over. We do not routinely request dates of birth or independently verify everyone’s age. Please do not subscribe or submit personal information if you are under 18. If we learn that we hold a child’s subscriber information, we will take appropriate steps to stop the subscription and remove the information unless there is a lawful reason to retain particular records. Contact us if you believe this has happened.
We use appropriate safeguards for the information we handle, including limiting access to those who need it. No online service can be guaranteed completely secure.
We do not make solely automated decisions about readers that have legal or similarly significant effects.
The newsletter is currently free. Before launching paid services, competitions, new advertising/data features or additional information-collection tools, we will provide the relevant details and choices and update this notice where necessary. New uses that require consent will not be authorised simply by changing this notice.
We will update the date above when we change this notice. We will draw material changes to readers’ attention where appropriate.
